Unison is for the music community, by the music community. If you’re involved in the industry – or if you’re an avid fan of Canadian music – then Unison is your organization, too. As a group of music makers and music lovers, we believe in:
- Supporting music makers with compassion and discretion in times of crisis.
- A supported, well-informed and healthy Canadian music community.
- Empowering music makers to pursue their art with confidence.
Your generous gift to The Unison Benevolent Fund allows us to provide critical help to those in the Canadian music industry at their greatest time of need. Contributions to Unison will help to pay for medical expenses, housing, food and other vital wellness services such as counseling, drug addiction support, and legal advice.

The busiest season for shopping, socializing and charitable giving is upon us. Why not mark your calendar and schedule time to plan your year-end giving? Donating securities or mutual funds, rather than cash, may be your best giving strategy. The Canada Revenue Agency does not apply capital gains tax on donations of publicly traded securities. Capitals gains are the increase in the value of your securities over the price you paid at purchase. When you sell your shares for cash, you’re responsible for the tax due on the gain, even if you plan to donate the proceeds from the sale. If you pay the tax out of those proceeds, there’s less money left to donate. Your charity receives a smaller donation and you have a smaller donation to claim for your charitable tax credit at the end of the year. But when you donate your securities directly through CanadaHelps, those capital gains aren’t subject to tax. This means your charity receives a larger gift, and you’ll benefit from a tax receipt for the full value of your eligible securities or mutual funds.
