Discussing Mental Health Everyday of the Year
World Mental Health Day is observed October 10th every year. The day is meant to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to talk about what needs to be done for mental health care to be a reality for everyone.
The day provides opportunity for those with mental health challenges to open up and speak about what they’re going through, however 24 hours comes and goes quickly. We all have mental health, and we all experience it differently. So why don’t we continue the conversation?
While it may not be easy to open up and speak about mental health, it is necessary to break the stigma that currently surrounds it.
Mental health struggles are highly prominent in the music industry. A recent study found that 80 percent of musicians suffer from stress, anxiety, and depression. While this number may come as a shock to some, it’s not that surprising. Music-makers experience difficult lifestyles, surrounded by unhealthy habits and lack of routine while on tour. They are constantly reminded of the pressures to succeed through social media, their teams, their fans, and their own self-criticism.
The East Cost Music Association conducted a survey last April that showed approximately 26 per cent of respondents had suicidal thoughts at some point in their life, compared to Statistics Canada’s 2012 national average of 11.9 per cent.
In order to make these numbers go down, everyone needs to become more open about mental health and not feel ashamed or embarrassed about what they are going through. Remember: You are not alone.
